5 Blockbusters Filmed on Tybee Island

Big-budget filmmakers have been featuring Tybee Island in their movies for some time now. How many of these have you seen?

1. The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

Spongebob filmed his second feature film on Tybee during the late summer and early fall months of 2013. Locals were featured as extras, and sightings of such household celebrities as Antonio Banderas were not uncommon. Nearby downtown Savannah was also featured in the finished product. 2. The Last Song

Hopeless romantics rejoiced when Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth and Greg Kinnear arrived on set to create the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ book, The Last Song. From June through August 2009, cast and crew could be spotted everywhere from downtown Savannah to Tybee Island. Many locals and tourists alike got their 15 minutes of fame in the background of the scenes!

3. The Conspirator

Robert Redford’s historical drama was filmed at Fort Pulaski and functioned as the military prison that housed the film’s protagonist. The fort made for the perfect Civil War setting, and even inspired the filming location of Abraham Lincoln vs. The Zombies in late 2011.

4. Dirty Grandpa

The star-studded cast of this irreverent comedy filmed their spring break scenes on Tybee’s quirky beach on April 27 through May 5. The box office success brought many big names to the island, a thrilling sight for lucky tourists who got a surprising treat during their stay!

5. Baywatch

Arguably the largest film hosted by Tybee Island, the reboot of Baywatch is currently filming. An open casting call has given tourists and locals a spot in the limelight, and onlookers can watch the action from afar. It’s an exciting time for our beautiful island!
